Stourport-on-Severn, often called Stourport, came into being in 1768 through the completion of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canals. From this time Stourport became one of the major distribution centres for goods coming into and being dispatched from the West Midlands.
The town today is more of a tourist destination. There are both the natural features, such as the majestic River Severn, and the man-made features, including the canal basins and locks. The latter are maintained by the Canal and River Trust who do a wonderful job in turning this once highly industrial area into a beautiful and tranquil location.
